Premature Infants Resuscitated with Air or Oxygen / PRESOX


Background


Premature infants have immature lungs and often need assistance with breathing at birth. Resuscitation oxygen levels vary from 21% (room air) to 100% oxygen. The best percentage of oxygen to use while resuscitating premature infants is unknown. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), and other researchers have reviewed all the available evidence currently and concluded that there is insufficient evidence on the amount of oxygen concentration to use for resuscitating premature infants. .


Purpose


To find out if resuscitation with 21% oxygen (the air we breathe) will result in less chronic lung disease and fewer developmental problems when compared to a higher, 60%, oxygen level.
